"Dubrovnik Churches"

This painting is a compilation of photos and sketches from our trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

In September 2017, we stayed in an apartment just a couple hundred yards from this scene.

In the foreground is the Church of St. Blaise, with a statue of St. Blaise.

In the background is the Dubrovnik Cathedral (of the Assumption).

We took pictures early in the morning with no people on the stradum,

and later in the day when hundreds of people lined the streets of the pedestrian zone..

Above - Close-up of late afternoon light and shadow on St. Blaise Church,

Below - I originally used the complementary colors of yellow and purple for the sunlit

and shade areas, but later brought orange into the sunlit areas

and more blue from the sky into the shade areas.
