"Redwoods"

This painting is a compilation of photos and sketches from various California hikes in the redwoods.

I've taken countless photos in California State Parks, of redwood forests and trails,

but I've never been pleased with them. Each individual photo had something that I liked,

but none gave me that "feeling" that I get when I'm hiking.

I guess it's the "can't see the forest for the trees" thing.

Paint still doesn't quite express what I had hoped for, but it's closer.

Above - There are so many textures in the forest -

the redwood bark, the willowy ferns, flowers, leaves and grasses.

Above - No two trees really look the same.

Below - In the final painting, I explored the dominant reds and greens,

but also yellow of the sun, the blues from the sky, and the purples in the shadows.
